Fifth of meat labels false

-

TESTS on meat and meat dishes found one in five had DNA from animals different from those claimed.

Of 665 ready meals, takeaways, sausages and fresh meat, 145 had animal DNA that varied from the label. Some had none of the meat.

The Food Standards Agency had the results for a year before a Freedom of Information request forced it to reveal them.

Prof Chris Elliott, of Queen’s University Belfast, warned of lawless small shops, saying: “There’s no one there to inspect.”
