ALLIES President Juncker and Martin Selmayr Going down: the EU Commissioners, all of them. That’s the verdict of the European Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly, after EU president Jean-Claude Juncker broke rules to promote his ally Martin Selmayr to the plum job of Secretary General.

The appointment was rushed through without proper scrutiny.

“It is extraordinary that no Commissioner seemed to question the Secretary General appointment procedure,” said Ms O’Reilly. So who’s going to pay for the scandal? No one, of course. The Ombudsman has simply and weakly called for new rules in the hope this won’t happen again.
