Air raid warden Bill Watson sits at the bedside of Mrs R Foster who had just given birth as the bombs fell in the Luftwaffe’s first large scale air attack on London. He was forced to act as midwife as Mrs Foster went into labour unexpectedly amid the chaos of the Blitz. From September 7, 1940, London was bombed by the Luftwaffe for 56 out of the following 57 days and nights.
