ROBBO MAJORS IN HISTORY

- BY DAVID McCARTHY

Scotland v Belgium Kick-off 7.45pm

ANDY ROBERTSON says he’s ready to make history as Scotland captain by leading the nation to a long-awaited major championship appearance.

The Liverpool defender (left) wears the armband for the first time against Belgium tonight before the real stuff starts with the visit of Albania to Hampden on Monday at the start of a UEFA Nations League campaign that could lead to Euro 2020 – and Scotland’s first crack at a Finals since the 1998 World Cup in France.

And the 24-year-old is adamant that boss Alex McLeish has the players to make the dream a reality.

He said: “The previous captains going back to 1998 will all sit there when they have a quiet time and the one regret they’ll probably have is that they never qualified for a tournament. I think we have a really good chance now.

“I believe that I will lead this team to a championship but it is about trying to prove that and it starts on Monday. They have brought in the new Nations League and there is a bit more chance of qualifying so we have to take advantage.

“If we can qualify, it is something that can put us in the history books – too long has passed since we have been in it.”

On his style of captaincy, Robertson said he will “lead by example on the pitch and off,” adding: “I hope I can lead the country for a long time”

He admits taking Scotland to the finals of a major tournament would trump all his previous achievements at club level, such as reaching the Champions League final with Liverpool.

He said: “The biggest honour you can have is to play for your country and if you are the one to lead them to a Championship then that would be special.”
