1892: James J Corbett knocked out John L Sullivan in the 21st round at New Orleans Olympic Club to become the first world heavyweight champion under Queensberry rules.
1895: Rugby league matches were first played to the new Northern Union rules. Wigan started their campaign with a 9-0 win at Broughton Rangers.
1963: Sussex, led by Ted Dexter, beat Worcestershire by 14 runs to win the first one-day cricket final at Lord’s.
1999: Bobby Robson, at the age of 66, took charge of his first Newcastle training session after succeeding Ruud Gullit as manager.
2004: Andrew Flintoff was named the International Cricket Council world one-day player of the year.

ENGLAND manager Ron Greenwood backed Ray Clemence ahead of a World Cup qualifier in Norway despite fears over the keeper’s form. Since moving from Liverpool to Spurs, Clemence had let in 10 goals in four matches. England lost 2-1 to Norway, sparking the famous television commentary that culminated with: “Maggie Thatcher, your boys took one helluva beating!”
