Rigby ‘fraudster’: I took £431 for my expenses, trial hears

- BY MATTHEW COOPER

THE fundraiser accused of taking cash meant for murdered soldier Lee Rigby’s son paid £431 out of a charity bank account to himself, a jury heard.

But Gary Gardner denied he withdrew the cash to “prop up” his personal overdraft.

He told police it was to cover expenses as he was helping four charities at the time. He said to officers: “There is obviously a reason for the £431, it’s something that I have paid.” The trial has heard Gardner, 56, spent up to £5,000 of the money donated after Fusilier Rigby’s murder in 2013 on producing a charity music single that raised £200. Gardner, of Medbourne, Leics, denies fraud. The trial at Leicester crown court continues.
