Losing 2 babies was horrible but hopefully we came out of it stronger

ZARA Tindall fought back tears as she spoke about the “horrible road” she and husband Mike went down in suffering two miscarriages.

But the Queen’s granddaughter believes they could be better parents because of the horrendous experiences they endured.

Mum-of-two Zara said: “Being helpless is horrible for anyone. It has been a horrible road but now we’ve come out the end of it, hopefully it makes you a stronger family.”

The 37-year-old, whose threemonth-old daughter Lena was pictured in public yesterday for the first time, struggled with her emotions as she spoke to BBC’s Breakfast TV programme. She admitted: “The hardest thing in our situation is that everyone knew. “Very much when things like that happen, normally it’s just your family and friends but, unfortunately, everyone knew about it. “Actually, I had so many letters saying, ‘I’m so sorry, we’ve been through the same thing’, which was incredible – and thank you to all those people. It just shows how often it does happen.” Zara, former eventing world champion and BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2006, praised Mike, 39, a rugby union World Cup winner, for helping her to cope.

She said: “I have a very supportive family. Mike is incredible, and it’s hard for the guys, too.

“It’s very different for us because we’re carrying the child but for guys I guess it’s kind of that helpless feeling, which must be incredibly horrible for them. They have still lost a child, too.”

Yesterday Zara entrusted Lena to friend Dolly Maude, a maid of honour at her wedding in 2011, as the Olympic silver medallist competed at horse trials in Gloucestershire. The baby, strapped into a harness around Dolly’s chest, looked blissfully unaware of her mother’s exertions. The couple’s renewed happiness follows their announcement in November 2016 that Zara had suffered a miscarriage. They then revealed in July she had lost another child during pregnancy. The couple, who also have a four-yearold daughter, Mia, have been praised for speaking about their losses. A Miscarriage Association spokesman said: “Thanks to Zara for talking about the experience of miscarriage and highlighting the needs of partners, too.”
