‘Give rental properties annual MOTs’
PRIVATE rental properties should have yearly “MOTs” to ensure they are fit to live in, a report urges.
A review by the University of York said current regulation is confusing.
An inspection would include current requirements such as electrical and gas safety certificates and make sure properties met a basic standard.
The test would be a tax-deductible business cost for landlords.
Julie Rugg, report co-author said: “A property MOT would give people confidence before they sign a tenancy.”
David Smith, of the Residential Landlords Association added: “We welcome the report. No one should face living in sub-standard accommodation.”
