TYKES RAISE THE BAHRE

German midfielder helps Barnsley make it seven unbeaten after answering SOS call from boss

- BY PETER OAKES

BARNSLEY 1 Adeboyejo 55 WALSALL 1 Cook 88 MIKE-STEVEN BAHRE spent a couple of months studying videos of Walsall’s flying start to the season.

But, after his first 90 minutes in League One, he was still in shock, admitting: “When I had the first call, I watched some highlights of matches, so I knew what it would be like.

“It’s better than I thought, it’s more intensive, and you have less time on the ball. You have to fight to give 100 per cent all the time – if you don’t, you get obliterated!”

Bahre, 23, had a phone call from his old Hannover boss Daniel Stendel within hours of him taking over at Oakwell – but the season-long loan deal was not sealed until the last day of August.

The German midfielder (above) helped Barnsley make it seven games without defeat – their best start since 1946 – and claimed: “It was not my best performance, but I only trained with the team three times.

“It’s my first week here, I had to get to know my teammates, how they play, and how they think.

“I signed the contract and then had to go back to Germany for all my clothes, I played a cup game, it was all very stressful.” Stendel insisted: “I have known him a long time and know he can play better.” Saddlers boss Dean Keates took drastic action by axing striker Andy Cook for the first time. But Cook responded in the right way, coming on 10 minutes from time to grab the equaliser, after Victor Adeboyejo had put the hosts in front. Keates, (left) who has guided the Saddlers to fifth in the table and 10 unbeaten games, said: “Andy was disappointed not to start.

“However, he took it on the chin and got the equaliser.”
