Mane sad at tragedy

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

LIVERPOOL star Sadio Mane was shocked and saddened after one person died and two were critically injured in a stampede at a football stadium in Madagascar.

Mane (below), along with Birmingham midfielder Cheikh Ndoye, were representing Senegal in an African Nations Cup qualifier. The Confederation of African Football has launched an inquiry after overcrowding issues caused a major crush before the AFCON qualifier in Antananarivo. Fans, who had queued from before dawn to get a glimpse of stars like Mane, were forced to go through one entrance gate.

The players were asked to go ahead with the game, which ended 2-2. The Senegal Football Federation reported afterwards that their players were left shocked and saddened by the events at the Stade Municipal de Mahamasina.

Mane and Ndoye have now returned to England.
