PET WANTS ANOTHER SWISS STROLL

- BY DARREN LEWIS

SWITZERLAND boss Vladimir Petkovic has told his men to maintain the high level they reached in their 6-0 demolition of Iceland. Key man Xherdan Shaqiri (right) was on the scoresheet, and the new Liverpool signing pulled the strings as the Swiss slaughtered the country that put England out of Euro 2016.

The defeat was so humiliating for the Scandinavian side that new coach Erik Hamren – in his first match as manager – was forced to apologise to the country and their fans. Petkovic now wants to leave England boss Gareth Southgate in a similarly tricky position.

He said: “Every match is a big game, we need to confirm our results, too.

“It was a great team performance, fast football, we need to repeat that, play fast. We have got past the first hurdle, now we are at a high level and we must stay at that level. We cannot look down, we must stay at this high level now.

“We made six changes against Iceland. That’s enough changes, so you can evaluate how strong your squad actually is.”
