Ashley looking at Debenhams

SPORTS Direct has discussed combining its newly bought House of Fraser with struggling rival Debenhams, a senior board member has revealed.

Simon Bentley said the Mike Ashley-controlled chain had looked at “different scenarios”.

However, the company later said it did not “intend” to make an offer for Debenhams.

Sports Direct already owns 29.7% of Debenhams, just below the threshold above which it is required to make a takeover bid under City rules.
