Tories ‘failed Muslims and Jews’ in vote
JEWISH and Muslim leaders have slammed the Conservatives for backing controversial Hungarian leader Viktor Orban.
Tory MEPs opposed a motion in the European Parliament condemning him for attacking minorities and suppressing free speech and press freedom.
It passed 448-197 but they were the only governing party in Western Europe to oppose it.
Jewish organisation the Board of Deputies said: “It is very concerning [they] chose to defend Hungary’s appalling track record.”
And the Muslim Council of Britain said: “It is deeply disappointing.”
But Tory MEP Daniel Dalton said: “Our vote was not an endorsement of Viktor Orban. Article 7 is a legal matter.”
