Gove blasted for refusing to condemn far-right EU leader
MICHAEL Gove has been blasted for refusing to condemn Hungary’s far-right leader, Viktor Orban.
Tory MEPs opposed a European Parliament move to censure Orban for attacks on Jews and Muslims and suppressing free speech.
But the Environment Secretary defended them, saying it was not MEPs’ place to criticise individual leaders – despite being the only governing party in western Europe to support him. He also refused to personally condemn Orban, saying: “I am not going to play that game”. Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Office Minister Jon Trickett said it showed “the acceleration of extremist right-wing tendencies” within the Conservative party. He added: “It’s shocking Cabinet ministers are choosing to support the Orban government’s anti-democratic practices.”
