NORRIE BEK TO HIS BEST IN DAVIS CUP

-

CAMERON NORRIE ensured Great Britain could bid a fond farewell to the traditional Davis Cup format in Glasgow.

A 3-1 victory against Uzbekistan, achieved with a match to spare thanks to Norrie’s 6-2 6-2 6-0 win over Sanjar Fayziev, guaranteed Britain will be seeded when the new-look competition gets under way next year.

The tie was the first step on the path to redemption for Dan Evans, back in GB colours for the first time since a 12-month ban for testing positive for cocaine.

There was redemption, too, for Norrie (above), the British No.2 who on Friday was two sets ahead and had a match point against Jurabek Karimov, only to choke and lose in five. Yesterday, he roared past Fayziev in under two hours.

Borna Coric kept his cool to prevail in a thrilling winner-takes-all duel with Frances Tiafoe to steer Croatia into the final of the Cup for the second time in three years, with a 3-2 win over the USA.

The 21-year-old Coric came from two sets to one down to defeat Tiafoe and finally subdue a remarkable fightback from the Americans, who had earlier levelled the tie 2-2 from two down.
