REESY MONEY
Mogg’s £500k after Brexit poll
HARD Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg has earned around half a million pounds since the EU vote.
The backbench Conservative, tipped as a potential party leader, has been paying himself up to £14,000 a month from his investment firm since June 2016.
Mr Rees-Mogg has made at least £313,164.57 from Somerset Capital Management LLP following the poll – for 30 hours’ work a month.
The Eton-educated Tory, 49, also earns £77,379 a year as an MP.
His hefty earnings come as most Brits face huge financial uncertainty ahead of Brexit. The economy is likely to take a massive hit, with trade, jobs and investment all adversely affected. Workers are likely to see a drop in their incomes and living standards.
Mr Rees-Mogg, who is chairman of the pro-Brexit European Research Group, says a hard exit would be good for Britain, but experts warn it will hurt household budgets.
Labour MP Neil Coyle, of the Commons Work and Pensions Committee, said: “People should be under no illusions that he has made an absolute killing out of this firm. The amount of money he has made shows the huge gulf with ordinary working people.”
It emerged this year SCM has set up two investment funds in Ireland, and the firms listed Brexit as a risk that could cause “considerable uncertainty”. Mr Rees-Mogg denied the move has anything to do with Brexit.
