Will Brexit Leave us high and dry?

-

When 17.4 million people voted for Brexit, they assumed those behind the Leave campaign had a clear plan. But the sheer incompetence and laziness of the arrogant Brexiteers has succeeded in massively eroding that support as they bumbled and fumbled their way in negotiations with Brussels.

Now we are reaching crunch time and the confusion, misinformation and infighting go on as the country lurches towards Brexit. The Leave campaign – under investigation by the police for breaking electoral law – is increasingly discredited.

Today, the reality and true implications of Brexit have made many realise we need a second referendum.

A P Milroy, Trowbridge, Wilts

Remainers are saying we should have another referendum, but just remember that after the Second World War this country was bankrupt and our cities were in ruins. But less than 12 years later, our PM Harold Macmillan was telling us we’d “never had it so good”. He was right – investment in rebuilding the country brought prosperity and jobs. Things were fine until we joined the EEC in 1973. From then on it was all downhill. Don’t worry about leaving the EU – the British people have overcome far bigger obstacles in the past.

Ian Huxtable, Exmouth

Why, oh why, is this poor excuse for a Government persisting with Brexit when all the signs indicate it would be disas- trous to crash out, soft or hard? Since 2016, an awful lot of misled Leave voters have changed their minds. No vote should be won on a lie, certainly not in the way this referendum was.

Alan Baber, Weston super Mare North Somerset

Remember when we joined the Common Market, the government of the day, management and unions all warned thousands of jobs would be lost if we didn’t join.

We did join and millions of jobs were lost, public transport and utilities are mostly run by foreign companies and we subsidise the German and French taxpayers.

We no longer build ships or aircraft and many British companies have been allowed to be bought out and production moved abroad. Plus, we are subjected to the rulings of the European Criminal Court of Justice.

We want our country back. Politicians should remember who pays their salaries.

Reg O’Neill Kingston on Thames, Gtr London

As more and more of the lies we were told leading up to the referendum become apparent, the only true democratic solution would be to have a second referendum based on the facts we now know. I also believe 16-year-olds should have the chance to vote because the outcome will shape their future.

R Tandy, Liverpool

Economic concerns are important, of course, with regards to Brexit. However, the fundamental truth about the EU is the fact it is a government. William Hague’s statement: “Britain should be in Europe, not run by Europe” can only be true if Europe doesn’t make law or policy for the UK. That is what I voted for. S Noyes Andover Hants
