Kipchoge breaks the record by 78seconds

- BY ALEX SPINK

ELIUD KIPCHOGE, three-time winner of the London Marathon, obliterated the world record in Berlin yesterday.

Dennis Kimetto’s four-year-old mark was left for dead as the 33-year-old Kenyan (above) powered to victory in 2 hours, 1 minute, 39 seconds.

Kipchoge’s time took 78 seconds off the previous best on a course which has now played host to the last seven world records.

“I ran my own race,” said the Olympic champion who quite literally did after the last pacemaker dropped out 17kms from home.

He went through 5km in 14.24, 10km in 29.21. His second half (60.33) was quicker thanks first (61.06).

Unbeaten since 2013, Kipchoge has long been tipped to become the first person to break two hours.

Last year on the Formula One track in Monza he clocked 2:00.25 but it was not recognised as a world record as in-out pacemakers were used.
