Our front page reported the airborne invasion of Holland had begun, as paratroope­rs and glider-borne Allied forces landed beyond the Rhine. The BBC broadcast to the Dutch urging them to assist the allied forces.

46 YEARS AGO (1972)

The first refugees expelled by Uganda dictator Idi Amin arrived in the UK. The tyrant ordered 55,000 Asians to leave the country within 90 days or face imprisonme­nt.

31 YEARS AGO (1987)

Ronald Reagan announced America and the USSR had agreed to slash the number of nuclear weapons. The Intermedia­teRange Nuclear Force Treaty was signed three months later by the US President and Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev. It was the first agreement of its kind between the superpower­s.
