Found on eBay: tragic WWII sailor’s long-lost records
THE family of a Royal Navy officer killed in one of the great tragedies of the Second World War have heard his voice again in rare recordings.
HMS Hood, pride of the Royal Navy and its largest vessel before the war, was sunk during the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941.
The battlecruiser and battleship Prince of Wales intercepted Bismarck and escorting cruiser Prinz Eugen as they sailed into the Atlantic.
After the loss of Hood, HMS Prince of Wales broke off the engagement.
Bismarck, the most powerful battleship afloat, was eventually sunk by the Royal Navy three days later with the loss of 2,200 crew.
It was torpedoed by Fleet Air Arm Fairey Swordfish biplanes before being finished off by three warships. RARE One of the discs JOY AT FIND Peter
