Size matters to mammals

BECOMING smaller was vital for the evolution of mammals, researchers say.

It reduced the physical stress of feeding with a large, complex jaw, so the modern mammal’s singlebone lower jaw could form.

Dr Stephan Lautenschlager, of Birmingham University, said shrinking “appears to be crucial”.
