David Bowie is photographed during rehearsals for The Elephant Man at the Booth Theatre on Broadway, New York. The Ziggy Stardust singer won rave reviews for his expressive portrayal of severely deformed John Merrick, who was cruelly put on display at a Victorian freak show. Bowie, who wore no stage make-up, played the role 157 times between 1980 and 1981.
