SHOCK REPORT Yesterday’s story

-

Yesterday, the Mirror revealed that the number of elderly people needing care will double to 1.2 million in the next 22 years.

And we launched a campaign to demand a better system which will give fair care to all. The current one is in crisis after the Tories choked off funding to councils.

The average cost of living in a care home is £29,270 a year. Care in an OAP’s own home costs around £11,000 a year for 14 hours a week and £30,000 a year for a full-time day carer.

In England, anyone with assets above £23,250 has to pay all the costs of long-term care. These are tapered down from £23,250 to £14,250. But even those below the £14,250 threshold are expected to contribute through a deduction from their state pension.
