Secrets behind the scenes of BODYGUARD

GRIPPING Keeley Hawes and Richard Madden in Bodyguard

- BY LAURA CONNOR laura.connor@mirror.co.uk

IT HAS gripped more than 10 million viewers with blood-soaked set pieces, audacious plot twists and the key mystery of Julia Montague’s death. And in a nerve-shredding 75-minute show, Bodyguard’s Sunday finale is expected to reveal all the answers.

But writer Jed Mercurio – who also masterminded Line of Duty – yesterday refused to confirm whether Home Secretary Julia (Keeley Hawes) really has been killed off, and whether there will be a second series.

But he promises plenty of action on Sunday. He said: “I can tell you that the episode returns to some of the very tense action sequences of the first two. There’s lots of answers to questions that have been in people’s minds these last few weeks.” The trailer for the final episode of his smash-hit thriller shows Richard Madden’s Sgt David Budd once again looking bloodied and bruised Jed even suggested Budd might be next to die, saying: “If that character survives we’ll have to get into a conversation about whether he would want to do another series.” In a snapshot of the chaos to come, pictures of Budd draped in a filthy blanket with wounds covering his stunned face were released this week. To create his realistic injuries, make-up artists used a mix of fake blood and sticky black gel known as charred paste.

The incredible special effects, coupled with non-stop action, have helped to give the BBC a blockbuster hit.

So we went behind the scenes at film and TV special effects company Artem, which developed some of Bodyguard’s most explosive moments, to see exactly how the action is created.

And despite the on-screen drama, it was a lot of fun, as Richard and Keeley showed when they posted a smiling selfie on set while in full make-up.

Bodyguard, BBC1, Sunday, 9pm.
