JULIA’S BOMB DEATH
Budd’s injuries in the final episode are similar to the effect created following the bomb scene which apparently killed off Julia in Episode 3.
I got a taste of how the true-to-life cuts and bruises are made at Artem, as senior technician Emily Pooley splattered my face with blood, dust and gruesome gashes as I sit at a table full of fake organs which once belonged to Robert Carlyle.
During its 30-year history, Artem has created amazing stunts for Carlyle in T2 Trainspotting, as well as Paddington and Hot Fuzz.
Emily tells me prosthetics aren’t necessary to create the full effect of Julia’s seemingly fatal injuries.
She layers on charred paste and fake blood to create 3D cuts, before using Fullers Earth clay dust powder to mimic the bomb debris covering face and hair. My doctor pal confirms from a selfie that they are similar to trauma injuries. Emily, 28, tells me some people actually start feeling phantom pains when they see their scarily realistic fake wounds. Emily researches her fake cuts and bruises from real pictures online. “Police would have questions if they look at my browser history,” she says.
