Creator Chris Lang and director Andy Wilson will again be in charge of the six new episodes. Lang said: “I so am delighted.

“The reaction to series three was better than I could ever have expected.”

The series was first broadcast in 2015 and won a Bafta for Tom Courtenay.

The third season aired in July and August and its finale was watched by almost seven million.

Each series focuses on a historic disappearance and suspected killing in which seemingly unconnected characters are gradually revealed to have some relationship with the victim.
