WW2 grenade scare clears police station

- BY JIM HARDY

POLICE evacuated their station after a man walked in to drop off a hand grenade he found during a house clearance.

A Royal Navy bomb disposal team raced to the site and train passengers faced delays as the railway station next door was sealed off too.

The grenade, thought to be from the Second World War, was taken away to be detonated and cordons in Newquay, Cornwall, were lifted after six hours.

Sgt Russ Speller said during the incident: “There’s been a device handed to us, we believe it to be an explosive device.

“We take every device seriously, it would be remiss of us to do anything otherwise, and obviously the safety of the public is paramount to us.”
