This is a picture of my dear mother Margaret Christison, right, and her elder sister Agnes taken in Newcastle in the 1920s.
Agnes had a very eventful life. She married a Belgian, Frederik Melkior, moved there and opened a cafe. When the Germans invaded in 1940, her nationality had to be kept secret or she would probably have ended in a camp.
They joined The Resistance and I have documents acknowledging the assistance they gave to downed Allied aircrew. When the Germans retreated they took all able-bodied men, including Frederik, to be used as slave labour in Germany, but he was able to escape and make his way back to Belgium which was quite a feat.
