On this day

107 YEARS AGO (1911) Our front page showed the Royal Navy’s first airship in its “death throes”. It broke in two in strong winds as it left its hangar for trials in Barrow Dock and was never rebuilt. 68 YEARS AGO (1950) UN troops retook the South Korean capital Seoul, three months after it fell to North Korea’s communists. More than two million died in the three-year Korean War. 61 YEARS AGO (1957) A thousand US paratroopers escorted nine African-American children to Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, to protect them from racists objecting to the 1954 Supreme Court ruling that segregated schools were unconstitutional.
