‘Pret failed to heed warnings on killer seeds in baguettes’

- BY JACK HARDY

PRET A Manger failed to put warnings on “artisan” baguettes despite six people suffering allergic reactions the year before a girl died, an inquest heard.

Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, 15, collapsed on a flight in 2016 after buying the sandwich at Heathrow, unaware it had sesame seed in it.

Company complaint logs from the previous year showed nine sesame-related allergy incidents – six involving artisan baguetes. Jeremy Hyam QC told the inquest a 17-year-old who almost died was among the cases. Her mum told the firm “other adverse events could easily occur” as allergy advice was only available on request. But Mr Hyam said Pret still failed to label sandwiches. Pret director Jonathan Perkins said: “We responded appropriately to each individual complaint.” The hearing at West London coroner’s court continues.
