MIDDLESBROUGH held their nerve in a penalty shoot-out to reach the fourth round last night. Preston’s Callum Robinson and Graham Burke blazed their spot-kicks over the bar, while Boro converted all the four penalties they needed at Deepdale. Preston had found a way past Boro within 28 minutes when Robinson netted with a quick turn and shot. But Middlesbrough levelled in the 35th minute through Ashley Fletcher (above), who rounded keeper Chris Maxwell. Tom Barkhuizen restored Preston’s lead on 66 minutes. But Boro hit back again three minutes later as Marcus Tavernier beat Maxwell from 22 yards.
