Nailing your next Skype interview
These interviews offer employers the benefits of a phone call with the advantages of assessing your interpersonal skills and body language. We’ve teamed up with GAAPweb, the accountancy specialist website, to bring you five tips on how to suceed in a Skype interview...
1 Dress
Although you won’t be physically face to face, you should dress as though you’re meeting your interviewer. Joggers and casual clothing are a definite no-no. Smart clothes will show you’re a contender.
2 Location
Take the interview in a quiet room with a neutral, tidy background – an unmade bed and pile of laundry won’t match the organisational skills you have listed on your CV. If you must have the interview in a public space, let your interviewer know beforehand and use headphones with a microphone to reduce background noise.
3 Plan
Eliminate possible interruptions. Turn off your mobile and mute any audible and visual computer notifications. Set up Skype with a professional username.
4 Impression
It’s important to build a rapport throughout, but especially at the start of the interview. Eye contact, smiling and a positive attitude are key to showcase your general demeanour and energy.
5 Problems
Have a practice run to ensure your audio and camera are working. If tech issues occur during the interview let the interviewer know, rather than risk misunderstanding their next question. Don’t get worked up – it doesn’t look good.
