Ryan’s blast is a spoiler for champs

DUTCHMAN Ryan ten Doeschate’s superb 53 not out from 62 balls earned Essex a nailbiting one-wicket win over champions Surrey at The Oval.

Morne Morkel’s 4-28 spearheaded Surrey’s display in the field in their bid to remain unbeaten this term before Essex – chasing 132 – just squeezed home.

Surrey reduced Essex to 122-8 and then 124-9 on a crazy run-out, before Ten Doeschate and Matt Quinn got the runs.

Surrey skipper Rory Burns said: “That’s the fight we have shown all year.”
