YOUR SHOUT

-

Thank you for continually highlighting the failing care system. We’re all guilty of bobbing along in our busy lives unaware of the utter frustration and heartbreak that’s going on behind closed doors.

I experienced this before losing my late husband to early-onset Alzheimer’s but consider myself “lucky” in the support I had. It’s not until you find yourself in this sort of situation that you realise that carers are the most hardworking, dedicated people you could ever meet. They deserve much better pay. The system overhaul can’t come soon enough. Tina, via email FP: It certainly can’t, Tina. Currently 110,000 social care jobs need filling.

Fiona, even if care was properly funded, where are all the carers going to come from? Carers are grossly underpaid and in short supply now, let alone in the future.

As a retired nurse, I also feel strongly that carers are recruited for the right reasons, that they do the job because they want to care and not just for the money. Steph, via email FP: I couldn’t agree more, Steph. The status of care as a profession could be changed by compulsory gold-seal training alongside a commensurate raise in salary. All funded by a care tax.

Fiona, how right you are to call for an overhaul of the failing care system. Not only this though – since the Tories came to power, the homelessness that Labour worked so hard to reduce has now increased to above pre-Labour days.

I worked as a homeless support worker for 13 years and watched the funding decimated by this couldn’t-care-less-I’m-alright-Jack Tory Government.

God help this country as long as they stay in power. Chris Torode, Catterick, North Yorks FP: You’re sadly spot-on there Chris.
