Brigadier General J V Campbell addresses troops of the 46th Infantry Division from the shattered Riqueval Bridge at the Battle of St Quentin Canal in the First World War. The Allies’ objective – to puncture one of the most heavily defended parts of the German Hindenburg Line – was considered one of the most outstanding successes of the four-year war, with 4,200 German soldiers captured at a cost of less than 800 casualties.
