Law must stop abuses and plug all loopholes
IT is almost a decade since the Mirror launched our Fair Tips campaign to stop restaurants taking money that diners want to go to waiting staff.
A code of conduct for the industry was introduced, supposedly to stop the worst exploitation, but it was voluntary and easy for unethical bosses to ignore. In 2016 the Tories announced a public consultation into the abuses still taking place and finally the Prime Minister has declared that she will act.
It has only taken her 826 days since the consultation closed. Worse, Theresa May gave no detail about how the abuses would be stopped and potential loopholes plugged.
I hope I am wrong, but judging by past performance it looks like this could be another disappointing case of all soundbite and no action.
