Benched Reed in Furyk fury
PATRICK REED slammed USA captain Jim Furyk for dropping him and breaking up his partnership with Jordan Spieth.
‘Captain America’ was the best player at the last two Ryder Cups and formed a strong link with his fellow Major winner at Gleneagles and Hazeltine.
But Furyk put Reed with Tiger Woods (the players above) – and they lost both fourballs matches together. He was then benched for both afternoon foursomes.
“For somebody as successful in the Ryder Cup as I am, I don’t think it’s smart to sit me twice,” Reed said.
Spieth got his wish to play with his pal Justin Thomas, but Reed added: “I don’t care if I like the person I’m paired with as long as it works and sets up the team.”
RORY MCILROY reckoned his last-hole singles defeat to Justin Thomas summed up his sorry season as he revealed he apologised to Thorbjorn Olesen.
The world No.5, who lost to Justin Thomas, said: “It’s my season in a nutshell. I wanted to contribute and help the rookies and I felt horrendous for Thorbjorn because the reason he didn’t play Friday afternoon or Saturday was because of me.
‘‘I had a chat with him on Friday after the fourballs and said sorry, you’ll have your chance.’’
