A West Berliner peers over the top of the Berlin Wall at Bernauer Strasse in the French zone. Many escape tunnels were dug under this part of the Wall, including the infamous Tunnel 57 which ended in Strelitzer Strasse. The tunnel was the location of a mass breakout by 57 East Berlin citizens on October 3 and 4, 1964. Standing from 1961 to 1990, the Berlin Wall divided communist East Berlin from the West.
