COUNCILS will get more freedom to borrow cash for building homes to finally tackle the housing crisis.

Copying a Labour plan, the PM pledged to scrap the cap on the amount town halls in England can borrow against their housing revenue account assets.

Charity Shelter said the reforms could help local authoritie­s build “up to 27,500 new social homes each year”.
