QUITTING YOUR JOB SENSIBLY
When resigning from a job, especially if you have been unhappy in your role or with your boss, there’s a temptation to let things slide and not be quite as efficient. But, it’s in your interest to do the best you can until your very last day – and leave with a smile. It’s a small world and you need to remember that present colleagues could become your boss in a future company, and they could be asked for a reference. Here Davide Cervellin, author of Office of Cards, gives his three tops tips on how to resign – in style and as a winner. He says in the end you want to be missed, not for people to think thank God you left.
1. Never bad-mouth your company or boss
Not even after you left. There is nothing to gain from gossiping – ever. You decided to go, good for you, take the high road and make sure you thank everyone and move on. Remember the person you may be complaining about could become your boss in another company. Or you may end up deciding to come back to the company in the future.
2. Leave things in order
Prepare a document detailing your job along with all relevant codes and access to files. If you are a people manager make sure you create a document detailing the accomplishments of each individual, their issues and your plans for their careers.
3. Talk to your people – your team and bosses
Leave them with a path, feedback on areas of improvement, what to watch out for, skills to develop and people to connect with. Similar to a performance evaluation.
