MPs probing environmental impact of fast fashion trend
MPS investigating “fast fashion” are to quiz the bosses of 10 major clothes chains on their environmental records.
The Environmental Audit Committee has heard consumers buy twice as much clothing as 10 years ago, but it is feared hundreds of thousands of tonnes of it ends up in the bin.
Committee chairwoman Mary Creagh said: “The way we design, produce and discard clothes has a huge impact on our planet. Retailers have a responsibility to minimise their environmental footprint and make sure workers get a living wage.” Primark and Next are among the chains being called on to give evidence. She said: “We want to hear what they are doing to make their industry more sustainable.” The British Retail Consortium has revealed up to 90% of garment workers earn below the National Minimum Wage.
