A GOLF fan manages a brave smile after being hit on the head by a ball struck by Ryder Cup player Tyrrell Hatton.

The golfer, 26, who rushed to help the woman, last night said he was “pretty devastated” by the incident.

It happened just days after Corine Remande was blinded in her right eye by a wayward golf ball during the Ryder Cup in France.

The latest victim was watching the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Fife when Hatton’s tee-shot at the 15th veered left on a strong wind and hit her forehead. Hatton said: “It is one of the worst feelings I’ve ever had on the golf course. I’ve

never hit anyone before.

He was given updates on the woman’s condition as he played on. He said: “We heard there were no major concerns and all she needs is a couple of stitches. That’s the good news. She was talking fine.

“We are always going to hit some bad shots. All we can do is shout ‘fore!’. But this shows golf is really not that important. It was hard to concentrate afterwards.” “The doctor asked her how the pain was out of 10 and she said, ‘three’. She got up and walked to the buggy. But it’s not a sight you ever want to see. We want spectators to have a great day. On this occasion she didn’t get to enjoy her day. I’m just thankful she is OK.”

Ambulance crews were called to the Kingsbarns course at 12.33pm and the woman, thought to be from Edinburgh and at the event with her daughter, was treated at the scene then taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

She did not appear to be seriously hurt, and one golf fan joked on Twitter: “Couldn’t make this up. I smell a new crisis in golf approaching. Cages around fairways? Fans to be given body armour at the gates?” But Corine Remande, 49, is taking things more seriously and plans legal action, claiming there were no proper warnings of the danger when she was hit by a shot from US Open champion Brooks Koepka, 28.

Charity worker Mrs Remande had travelled with her husband from Egypt to France for the Ryder Cup, which was won by Europe, with English player Hatton part of the winning team. Koepka was heartbroken after learning his shot had hit Mrs Remande.
