FOR all the talk of team spirit, of bonding, of motivational speeches, of togetherness, the Europeans comprehensively beat the Americans because they played better golf. All that other stuff is fine, but a tear-jerking video does not hole a tricky five-footer or find the short stuff from the tee. Technique and talent does that. It was no plucky underdog winning the Ryder Cup. These are seriously good players. Which is why it is a shame that, for all the fervour generated by their win, the American public get to see more of them than we do.

AFTER Valterri Bottas was ordered to move over and let Lewis Hamilton through in the Russian Grand Prix, the world champion suggested he would repay the favour at some stage.

That would just make things doubly worse. The reason the Russian Grand Prix and Hamilton’s gifted win was such a turn-off is that, funnily enough, when you tune into a car race you want to see, er, cars racing.

If we wanted to see someone move over when asked, we could just take a spin on the M1.
