Delays to hit trade pacts after Brexit

- BY MIKEY SMITH

TRADE deals could take years to seal no matter what Brexit Theresa May finally agrees, said top Tory Sir Alan Duncan.

And Leave voters could be unhappy at the Prime Minister’s deal, admitted the Europe Minister.

He said of the 2016 referendum: “People were voting for a concept rather than a contract.

“Now we’re having to define that contract. Some will maybe say ‘Oh, I didn’t see that coming.’”

He called a second vote “fanciful” as there would not be enough time.

Lib Dem MP Layla Moran said Mr Duncan had “admitted Brexit makes our trade hand much weaker”.

She claimed: “The consequences for the economy will be dire in every sector.”
