Global police boss quits after China arrest
THE head of Interpol, who went missing in China last month, has quit the international police body.
Interpol announced the departure of Meng Hongwei last night after China confirmed it is holding him, and said he is being probed by its anti-corruption watchdog. Interpol, based in Lyon, France, said: “Interpol received the resignation of Mr Meng Hongwei as President.”
His wife Grace had made a plea for international help to find her husband, who is also a viceminister of public security in China. She revealed yesterday that the day he went missing he sent a social media message telling her to “wait for my call”, before sending a knife emoji, signifying danger.
In a statement The National Supervisory Commission in China said: “Meng Hongwei is under investigation.”
THE mystery over the disappearance of Interpol chief Meng Hongwei deepens.
Yesterday, his wife claimed he sent her an emoji of a knife to signal he was in danger shortly before he vanished in China last week. And Interpol revealed he has now quit his job.
Beijing’s tardiness in revealing Meng is being probed by an anti-corruption body raises critical questions about this intriguing case.
China should have told of his arrest the day he was nabbed. What are they trying to hide?
