The BBC’s suggestion that free TV licences for the over-75s could be scrapped has been met with shock and outrage – and that’s just from Radio 2 DJ Tony Blackburn.

The presenter, who turned 75 in January, says he is “devastated” he could lose his free access to the Beeb in two years’ time.

“I’m very sad to hear it, because actually this is the first year I’m not paying the licence fee,” he tells The Mirror.

“I struggled to get to 75 all this time just to get a free licence and now, suddenly, it might be taken away from me. I’m sort of devastated.”

Last month, director- general Lord Hall said the corporation was considering scrapping free licences for older viewers.

The government is phasing out its reimbursement, with the BBC facing the annual bill of £725million from 2020.

Tony, on tour with the BBC Sounds of the 60s live show from February, says he’ll be speaking to the DG, though: “I think I’ll have to get an appointment.”

Meanwhile, chatting about the gender balance at the Beeb, Tony says he is delighted to see Zoe Ball land the station’s breakfast show, while Jo Whiley presents drive time with Simon Mayo and Sara Cox has an evening show.

“It’s a good balance now,” he says, then quips: “If anything, there’s a slight lack of males.”

Tickets for the Sounds of the 60s tour are on sale now from livenation.co.uk. I struggled to get to 75 all this time and it might be taken away.
