Henry & Terry set for Villa

- BY JAMES NURSEY

ASTON VILLA hope to name Thierry Henry and John Terry as their new managerial dream team.

The plan is for Henry to occupy the hot seat with Terry (below) as his No.2.

Terry last night paved the way for a move into management by announcing his retirement from playing.

Arsenal legend Henry is in final talks amid competition from Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers – who has since distanced himself from the job – and Rui Faria, Jose Mourinho’s former right-hand man.

Henry is an assistant coach with Belgium and the FA hope to come to a quick agreement over his release. He has an exit clause in his contract.

It would be his first senior management role in his own right. He impressed Villa’s wealthy owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, who considered appointing him as soon as they bought the club in July. But they stuck with Steve Bruce, who was sacked last week.

Chief executive Christian Purslow is under orders to finalise a deal for Bruce’s successor during this week’s international break.

Henry, 41, worked with Roberto Martinez during the World Cup when Belgium finished third.

Terry played for Villa last season and is hugely popular with supporters.

His announcement last night comes just a month after he turned down a move to Spartak Moscow, despite reportedly having a medical.

His last game as a professional was Villa’s 1-0 Championship play-off final defeat to Fulham in May. Terry won 78 England caps, five Premier League titles with Chelsea, five FA Cups and three League Cups.
