HUGHES: WE HAD NO GET UP AND GO

-

MARK HUGHES condemned a “typical afternoon” for Southampton which saw yet another home defeat.

Chelsea have now joined Leicester City in winning at St Mary’s more times than the Saints since last December.

Southampton have won only once in 15 home games while the two recent Premier League champions have both won twice.

Hughes said: “It was a typical afternoon for us. It didn’t start with the intensity we wanted. Too passive. We allowed them to be comfortable in possession.

“If we scored first it might have been a different type of game for us. But we conceded first and that plays into Chelsea’s hands. They set the trap and we fell into it.

“Maybe last year they didn’t have that devilment that’s in their play at the moment. It is very difficult to contain but I expect us to be better than we were.”

Southampton (above, Ryan Bertrand) have now won only four out of 16 Premier League games under Hughes – and sit two points above the drop zone.
