1928: Two years after becoming the first man to hit three home runs in a World Series game, Babe Ruth repeated the feat, hitting three homers against the St Louis Cardinals.

1988: Jackie Milburn (above), one of Newcastle’s greatest players and scorer of both goals in their 1951 FA Cup final win, died aged 64.

1999: St Helens were crowned Super League champions after beating Bradford Bulls 8-6 in the Grand Final.

2007: US sprinter Marion Jones returned all five Olympic medals she captured during the 2000 Games in Sydney after admitting taking performanc­e-enhancing steroids.
