New Doctor Who resists reviews to save her soul
DOCTOR Who Jodie Whittaker wowed fans in The Woman Who Fell To Earth but is keeping her feet firmly on the ground.
An average of 8.2million viewers tuned in to see Whittaker’s official debut as the Time Lord, more than predecessors Peter Capaldi, Matt Smith and David Tennant. But Whittaker, 36, has avoided reading reviews of her performance because it would not be good for her “soul”.
But the Broadchurch star, the first female Doctor, was excited by fans’ reaction to Sunday’s episode.
She told them on an Ask Me Anything thread on Reddit: “[I’m] excited that the fans have responded so passionately to all this hard work. I think there’s a dangerous line for me to start reading what’s been said. Positive or negative, it wouldn’t have the best reaction to my soul.”
Whittaker, who first appeared as the Time Lord in last year’s Christmas episode, received largely positive remarks from critics and fans for last week’s show. Asked who her role models are, she said: “I think I’ve always been inspired by ordinary heroes.
“It doesn’t take fame and a public voice for me to find inspiration from people, but on a public platform, I’m continually in awe and inspired by Michelle Obama.” ■ Doctor Who, Sunday, 6.55pm, BBC One.
